Elastic Chain

A row of ten small dynamic bodies is linked by spring-damper tissue so learners can see how an impulse moves as stretch, recoil, and damping along an elastic chain.

Parameter definitions

Chain stiffness (N/m)

Spring stiffness shared by each link in the elastic chain.

Tissue damping (Ns/m)

Damping reduces oscillation and converts motion into heat-like energy loss.

Drive impulse (Ns)

Timed impulse at the free end that launches a wave through the chain.

Gravity (m/s^2)

Downward acceleration applied to all dynamic links.

Concepts

Elastic transfer

A local impulse stretches one spring, then neighboring springs exchange motion and stored energy.

Damping

Damping removes oscillation, reducing wave amplitude as it moves down the chain.

Experiments

  1. Increase chain stiffness while leaving damping unchanged.
The wave should transfer faster with less visible stretch per link.
  2. Raise tissue damping near the maximum.
The free end motion should settle quickly and less wave energy should reach the anchor.
